Filtration: Gutter Covers Other Function

Gutter covers aren’t only good for keeping dirt and debris out, but also as a first-stage filtration method for rain harvesting systems.

With the growing scarcity of freshwater worldwide due to pollution, climate change, and overpopulation, many have made it a habit to make do with every inch of rainfall that comes their way. A rain harvesting system can be as simple as a huge barrel at the end of the downspout. The collected and filtered rainwater may then be consumed when local water use restrictions are in effect.

Mesh type gutter covers are the most effective kind in filtering rainwater. Dome-type gutter covers may limit the entry of debris, but not of particles small enough to be caught by a mesh. As gutter covers are not designed primarily to serve as rainwater filters, they have to be complemented by a device that can do the job more thoroughly. By keeping out contaminants like leaves and seeds, however, gutter covers can reduce the work of the main filtration system.

Rain harvesting is already practiced in major cities and towns across the U.S. and the world. A home without one would be missing out on the opportunity for additional sources of usable water, as well as reduced water bills. Installing gutter guards will not only save you from backbreaking work but will also give you the chance to help the environment.
